Act Naturally

I love spending the fall equinox in the woods, and enjoying seeing the fading sunlight shine through soon to be bare trees.

There is nothing more calming and life affirming, in my opinion, than a walk in the woods. This pleasure goes back to when I was a teenager in Utah. I would love to hike in the canyons above Salt Lake City and enjoy the foliage. This continued when I moved back to New Jersey. What sealed the deal for foliage for me was going to college in New Hampshire-the heart of leaf peeping territory.

I have never before witnessed such splendid colors and the subtlety of hues. Many years later, my husband and I spent an October week in the Shenandoah Valley, and were treated to magnificent colors. We fished and hiked and were treated to breathtaking views. I think I may have made a peeper out of him during that vacation. Hiking in the fall, no matter where you go, is an amazing experience. There is a different vibe in the air, especially if you live in a climate where the weather is starting to get colder. My son and I love to go hiking with our dog.

One of our favorite places to go in South Dakota is Blood Run, which is the newest state park. If we are short on time, we go to the Outdoor Campus, which is this amazing park in the middle of suburbia. The bike trails also. There is a certain level of tranquility that we find there, and going along the trail makes our dog very happy. It makes me so happy to share my love of the outdoors with him, and watch him develop a relationship with nature.
