Democracy

It's the middle of the presidential election cycle, and the parties are increasingly swiping at each other. Collegial banter has given way to ugly attacks. Last week was the Republican convention, this week is the Democratic where both parties lay down their party platforms. A platform is a basic outline of what the campaign supports and is the basic elements or core beliefs of the party.
This being a democracy, if I ran for president, this would make up my platform:
There would be parity in the classroom. Kids in Trenton, NJ and Chicago would get the same text books and curriculum as Beverly Hills and Ridgewood. Special ED services would be the same nationwide, so parents don't have to move to different states for their children to have access to therapies.
Preventative care would be free, as would vaccinations including the shingles shot. No more would the uninsured be diagnosed with cancer that's stage 4, because they couldn't afford a simple screening. People would be healthier and happier.
Speaking of happiness, mental health would be treated as a disease, like cancer or diabetes. The stigma would be gone and there would be better access to care. I wonder how many nuisance crimes and chronic homelessness would be cured by taking mental health out of the dark ages.
Hunger would be eradicated. People wouldn't just get food stamps or WIC, they would get a nutritionist helping them plan meals and cook. People would get credit for gardening and creating urban farms. Kids would learn about healthy eating choices from preschool onward. There would be supermarkets in the inner city, not just bodegas.
There would be opportunity for all children. Community centers will spring up, giving kids access to music lessons and sports and art and more. They will be granted something incredibly important: hope.
That hope would translate to a job or further education after high school. There would be incentive to be mor.e.
Our constitutionally granted freedoms will be respected and valued. Instead of inciting hate and rage, we will find that harmonic balance and follow the path of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
