I need to preface this by saying I am pro life-from conception to death.
That being said, there have been reports about Plan B being available on a Pennsylvania college campus through a vending machine.
My feminist side is excited. Finally someone gets IT. The rest of me is shaking my head in despair. My concern about it is the fact it removes the context of what Plan B is, and when should it be used.
First and foremost, parents need to do a better job educating their children. Abstinence only education programs leave out part of the picture. It's like getting a recipe without measurements. I know that when the time comes, I plan on some pretty frank and honest discussions with my son.
And not just the mechanics either, but about what constitutes love and not lust. What the deed means and how it literally has the potential to kill. Seriously.
I think for a lot of kids, those discussions aren't happening, and parents are letting the schools teach it to their kids-then get upset with the curriculum.
Other parents think that their religious beliefs will overcome society. While admirable, I caution that even the Amish have rumpspringa, so there may be flaws with that way of thinking.
If our children are educated, the likelihood of them needing plan b is greatly diminished. If you have an open and honest dialogue with your child overall, chances are it will continue.
My sincere hope is that by educating and loving our children, we can prevent the need for Plan B and more drastic measures.
Carry on.
