I love to dance. I took ballet growing up, and added jazz to the repetoire in my teens and continued with both through college. I really enjoyed the discipline of them, and they were part of my keep fit scheme. However, as I got older I stopped dancing, and it was a long forgotten memory. Last year, as a fundraiser for breast cancer, a friend invited me to a zumba-thon. I had never done zumba before, and wasn’t sure if I reallly wanted to, but it was for a great cause, so I reluctantly signed up.
Our instructor was a bundle of energy. She barked out directions, and I was immediately lost (I probably should have done some research ahead of time). After about 10 minutes, I was able to pick up on some of the basic steps and even began having a great time. By the time I was done about an hour later (they kept going) I think I was hooked.
There are four basic steps in Zumba, and all other moves are variations. The first is the merengue. This is the easiest, because you are marching in place fo rthe most part.
The second is the salsa rhythm. Its like a a two step, only more graceful and energetic.
The third is cumbia. Its worth noting that this came out of Columbian slave dances-they were bound ankle to ankle and this move is based on being able to only move one side of the body at a time.
The fourth is reggaeton, which is reggae and hip hop mashed together. The music is kick butt, and so are these moves.
I am not class ready, so I bought the Wii game at Last Stop CD Shop, and have been practicing in my basement. My son thinks its quite funny, and keeps threatening to post a video of me doing it to You Tube. Apparently, I don’t look like they do on the infomercials. I will admit that it is a lot of fun. I guess that’s why the tag line is join the party.
