Joyful, Joyful

Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.

Ephesians 4:26-7

Several years ago, I made a commitment to live my life authentically and full of joy, peace and love. I was a new mother of a happy, healthy five year old, and I wanted him to know life in a home filled with happiness and love. For the most part, I was successful, but I have been feeling that this is all been slipping away from me over the last few years. The biggest obstacle to my joy, peace and sanity is letting other people dominate my thoughts. It gives the devil an opportunity in my life. By letting others influence me, its subscribing to someone else’s beliefs and values.

I believe in love.

I believe in peace.

I believe in joy.

For a few years now, I have been very angry. Its not one particular thing, its just there, like a wart or a blister. Its there, you pick at it once in a while, its ugly but its not going to kill you. Instead, it festers. If you have a blister that gets infected, you can get cellulitis which can become serious-and kill you. The same with uncontrolled anger. It can infect you and eventually you will rot from the inside out.

I could feel it festering, in my soul. I was turning bitter and angry. No amount of accolades or recognition could change it either, because I wasn’t ready to face it. There are a variety of reasons why the anger is there, ranging from daily annoyances to really big things, like the anger I felt over suffering through 2 surgeries and knowing that I will need yet another. I need to let go of it all.

Easier said than done.

I can’t go back and change what happened in the past. If I could, there would be a lot of things-especially in the past few years-that I would do over. Its disturbing to me, because I have always tried to live life without any regrets. You can’t change it-actions were taken, words were spoken-so why let it consume you? I lost my own perspective. There is a French phrase, l’esprit d’escalier, which roughly translates to the words you wish you could say. I have had a case of l’esprit d’escalier for too long! I keep rehashing conversations in my head, saying what I wish I had in this imaginary instance. This doesn’t serve any purpose, other than the fact that I was continuing to mad over something that wasn’t really benefiting anyone else, most notably myself.

The light bulb went off when I was grocery shopping yesterday. I don’t like food shopping to start with, I especially don’t like Wally World, and I was operating on literally NO SLEEP. To make matters worse, I am quite anal about how things go into my cart, on the conveyor belt, and subsequently into bags and my cart. I have my purchases arranged by panty shelf, refrigerater/freezer and other. I explained to the cashier that to not make the bags heavy because I wouldn’t be able to lift them, and that to please keep everything in order. I didn’t think I was asking for that much, and most cashiers think I am a bit crazy, and I try to be friendly about things.

The poor cashier I had yesterday deviated from my “rules” (think Big Bang Theory and Sheldon with who sits where on the couch-that is my bagging rubric). As a result, I lost it. She compounded it by putting all the can goods into one bag, which of course RIPPED as I put it into the cart. Just a teeny tiny rip that could have easily been double bagged and been done with it. I, instead, chose to be a witch about it and I probably drove this poor woman to either tears or worse yesterday. I wasn’t really angry at her-it was a variety of things. It was the lack of sleep, the fact that despite working all weekend blah blah blah I had to go grocery shopping before I even came home, the fact that I was in Wally World along with half of eastern South Dakota, western Minnesota, and northwestern Iowa it seemed, and the fact that grocery prices still are skyrocketing up, I had no clue what I was going to make for dinner, and the five gazillion other things on my brain-all of which played into my outburst. (none of these are valid excuses, by the way)

As I laid in bed, recounting my day, I replayed that encounter over and over again. I wanted so badly to go back in time and change it, but I can’t. Once something happens, it happens. It was the conscious choice of continuing to feel that anger, or to let it go that is mine to make. If I hold onto it, it makes me suffer.

No one else, just me.

I have to own it.

And let it go.

Don't Bring Me Down

I think everyone needs a personal cheerleader. Someone who will pat you on the back and say "good job". We all need a cheer when you have a tough day to switch perspective.
Unfortunately, most of the time we wind up with negative nellies and Debbie downers who just want everyone to be as miserable as they are. It's a subliminal form of control: they can't stand seeing other people being happy.
The unfortunate part is there are more negative folks than positive out there. They seem to congregate around the happier folks too, like moths to a flame. It seems that their soul purpose is to crush happy people's spirits.
As the old adage goes, haters are going to hate.
And they do.
It seems as if a percentage of the population suffer from schadenfreude. Shylock is their hero, and they demand a pound of flesh from the happy and non bitter. Somehow I don't think that their sunday school education included Romans 12:17
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly.[a] Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.
If you are of a more secular persuasion, as Barry Manilow sang:

You see I feel sad when you're sad
I feel glad when you're glad
If you only knew what I'm going through
I just can't smile without you

Instead, it seems as if there are more angry, nasty, vindictive people who are lying in wait for the happier people to have a bad day or a momentary lapse in their bliss. Using the concept of Occam's Razor, we are shaving away to the basic concept: there are people who just want others to be as sad and miserable as they are.
To wit: a friend of mine was visiting with other moms before a PTA meeting. She just lost all the baby weight and had gone back to work and was feeling really good. Several of the other moms channeled their inner mean girls and made catty remarks (not to my friend's face, of course). During the meeting, these girls (and that's how they were behaving) sat in the row behind her, continuing to make comments. By the time the meeting was over, she was ready to burst into tears.
We were talking over lunch the other day about it, and it still upset her.
We teach our kids to be nice; to not say anything if we can't say something nice. We teach our kids to be good friends to each other, to overlook differences and try to find common ground. One of the blessings of autism is my son doesn't understand nuances-he calls it like he sees it. If you're mean, hes going to call you on it. Sometimes I wish I had that freedom to just say it.
The sad thing is bullying doesn't end once we graduate from school, it just takes on different facets. It happens in PTA's, the gym and even *gasp* the yoga studio. I just wish we can take what we are teaching our kids and apply it to our lives. We need to look for the good in everyone else, just like we teach our kids to. Practicing namaste-the light in me salutes the light in you-will help make the world a better place.

Ain't that Pretty At All

When I did my photo shoot a few weeks ago, the photographer mentioned to me that I was really pretty and photogenic. I could have kissed her because lately I have been feeling quite "unpretty".
I am overweight, no let's put it out there: I'm fat. All the gains I made post op last year I lost, and more. I'm not eating as healthy as I'd like and I'm certainly not working out how I'd like to as well.
Following November's surgery, I feel particularly ugly with 16 holes across my belly.
A lot of my mental energy is consumed with the fact that I will never be anything but curvy. I'm not flat chested. I have hips. And as Freddie Mercury so memorably put it, fat bottom girls make the rocking world go round.
Nike even has a campaign devoted to this:
http://m.pinterest.com/pin/47358233551257101/
I have been so focused on what I wasn't that I've lost sight of what I am. It's crazy making. I know I'm flawed (hint: we all are) but I have an inner beauty and strength beyond compare. If I didn't, I wouldn't be able to deal with some of the stuff life has thrown at me.
Losing weight and getting healthy, for me anyway, isn't about things-getting a promotion or turning heads walking down the street or whatever. It's about that rush you get when you can do more and go farther. It's the ability to ride a bike with my son without having to stop and gasp for air. I want to run up and down stairs without getting winded. I want to carry in all my groceries without help. I want my back pain to go away. I don't want to be dealing with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes because I chose not to take care of myself. My son is starting to head into those tween and teen years and I don't want my body to be a source of embarrassment for him.
I want to be healthy.
My biggest stumbling block is that I'm an "emotional eater". I stuff my face to deal with my feelings. Surprisingly enough, all the great things that have been happening in my life (teaching cooking classes, woman of the year, my book being published, this little blog taking off) has triggered a lot of other emotional stuff. Part of me doesnt feel I deserve it because im not this thin, beautiful woman.
There is a really awesome website dedicated to embracing yourself called Curvy Yoga (http://www.curvyyoga.com/). Like Anna, I am not your typical yogi, and it's hard when you can't always get into poses in class. The main goal is self acceptance. I've realized that my curves should be a sense of pride not disgust. So I won't be some bean pole thing on a magazine (thank you Sir Mix a Lot) but I have been a magazine cover, despite that.
I deserve to be healthy, not just for myself but for my son. It's the last week of the year, and it's been an emotional roller coaster to say the least. One of my intentions for 2012 is to come to peace with myself.
Stuffing my body full of food isn't being healthy. It's not living my life to it's best. It's not setting a good example. I also am setting the intention that I am doing this for me; not to look prettier or to get attention or whatever. It's for me to be my best. If all those other things happen, well then it's a bonus.
I set out an intention several years ago of following my bliss and have gotten sidetracked time and again. Part of cultivating a good life and raising a happy child is if you are happy too. Raise a glass, for 2012 and it's intention for ms to follow my bliss.

Tonight I'm going to Rock you tonight

One of my all time favorite movies is Spinal Tap. I have seen it quite literally 100 times.

http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0088258
Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you make ten a little louder, make that the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pauses] These go to eleven.

Well, my stress level is currently at an 11. I honestly am not sure how much more I can take before I self combust like the unfortunate Peter James Bond playing the Jazz Blues festival on the Isle of Lucy.
Spontaneous Combustion: A phenomenon which causes people to catch fire without apparent cause, burning them to ashes but leaving surrounding objects unscathed. According to David, it affects a dozen people a year but is not widely reported. Peter "James" Bond, an early Tap drummer, was the first rock musician to ever spontaneously combust. He left behind a green globule on his drum seat and a scarred set of drumsticks that were retrieved as mementos by manager Ian Faith. The same fate befell Mick Shrimpton.

I digress....
Currently I am attempting, quite poorly as it were, to hold it together. Ive had bizarre things befall (& befuddle) me in the last several months, and quite frankly, I am tired.
I am tired of expending a ton of energy on things that don't really matter. Since I'm doing all that, it leaves me very little time to do what truly matters.

Janitor (Wonderful Smith): "Go straight ahead."
David: "Yeah."
Janitor: "Turn right, the next two corners. And the first door you sign, says authorized personnel only..."
David: "Yeah."
Janitor: "Open that door. That's the stage."
David: "You think so?"
Janitor: "You're authorized, you're musicians, arn't you?"
David: "Yeah. Alright, thank you. Thank you very much. Rock 'N' Roll! Rock 'N' Roll!"
???: "Let's get it. Let's get it."
Nigel: "This way?"
David: "No, this way. This way."
Derek: "Straight through."
David: "Rock 'N' Roll!"
Derek: "Hello Cleveland! Hello Cleveland!"
David: "Uh?"
Janitor: "You must have made a wrong turn."

The way things are in my life right now, I totally relate to that scene. I've been given directions, told what to do...and I'm still wandering around, totally lost. I know what needs to be done daily: eat healthier foods. Drink water, not soda. Get enough rest. Practice self care. Exercise. Pamper myself. I have that road map-those specific directions to follow my bliss. It's a conscious choice whether or not I will.

Derek: "We're lucky."
David: "Yeah."
Derek: "I mean, people should be envying us. You know?"
David: "I envy us."
Derek: "Yeah."
David: "I do."
Derek: "Me too."

My grandmother used to joke around with me and call me the golden child. Even today, I've got a lot going on for me...at the risk of sounding like I'm bragging or what not. I live in a beautiful home. I'm married to my dream guy. I've got this son who had defied all the experts, two awesome pets. I look good. I'm talented. I'm a pretty decent person.
I'm blessed.
And that tends to annoy people. There are those out there that find people like me annoying and almost threatening. These folks are determined to steal people like me's joy. They want us to be as miserable as they are.
Quite simply, it's a matter of envy. We all can have bliss, but you need to choose it. For whatever reason, these negative nellies have made the choice to throw their own pity party & make others pay for their misery.

Marty: "If I were to ask you what your philosophy of life or your creed, what would that be?"
Viv: "Have a good time all the time. That's my philosophy, Marty."

I think that sums up my follow your bliss mindset. Let life bring you joy. If it feels like a chore or doesn't make you happy, chances are there's a problem.

Rock on, spinal tap. Rock on.

Everyday a Winding Road

I have a confession to make: Meghan and I grew up together. We graduated high school together, and were on the newspaper and yearbook together. For a great number of years she had the writing career I had coveted.

While I am not world famous, or a best seller, or what not, I realized that there was a lot more to my life than hers.

For one thing, I met my true love pretty darn early in my life. He's been sweeping me off my feet since 1993. If you are counting folks, that's 18 years. That's a dang long time for two people to be staring across a table at each other. But we do, and still continue to do so.

Another thing, is I am settled. I am happy with my life, for the most part. Sure, I'd love to lose some weight. I'd love to complete a to do list. I'd love to do a lot of things but if I don't (and I usually don't), its ok.

I have an amazing life. I may not have gone to Vassar or write for the LA Times, but I am a rockstar to two very important people in my life.

I have to admit, I just started the book, and I am not far enough into to formulate an opinion. But, from what I have gathered, I know I made the right choices. Everything that has happened in my life has brought me to this very spot, for a very specific reason. I may not know what it is at the time, but even the littlest choice has significant effect for me. Call it my own personal butterfly effect.

I have realized that a choice to go out with a friend one evening led me to meeting my husband.

I have realized that if it was not our struggle with infertility, I would never have been a foster parent.

 Or an adoptive parent.

Or a parent, period.

I have realized that if it wasn't for a bully chasing me when I was 7, I would never have run into Rev. Anderson and the shortcut through his backyard. It also led me to being an Episcopalian.

I have realized that it took my father in law dying for us to start living our lives.

There are so many blessings that have come out of something so small, so minor that have gone on to change my life.

Everyday is a winding road.

And my life is perfect.
