Psalm 30[a]
A psalm. A song. For the dedication of the temple.[b] Of David.
1 I will exalt you, Lord,
for you lifted me out of the depths
and did not let my enemies gloat over me.
2 Lord my God, I called to you for help,
and you healed me.
3 You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead;
you spared me from going down to the pit.
4 Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;
praise his holy name.
5 For his anger lasts only a moment,
but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may stay for the night,
but rejoicing comes in the morning.
6 When I felt secure, I said,
“I will never be shaken.”
7 Lord, when you favored me,
you made my royal mountain[c] stand firm;
but when you hid your face,
I was dismayed.
8 To you, Lord, I called;
to the Lord I cried for mercy:
9 “What is gained if I am silenced,
if I go down to the pit?
Will the dust praise you?
Will it proclaim your faithfulness?
10 Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me;
Lord, be my help.”
11 You turned my wailing into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
Lord my God, I will praise you forever
In the last two or so weeks, my whole life has turned itself upside down. Its been a struggle to get motivated to do anything due to the stress I have been feeling. I have been surrounded by negative people, who like the Greek choruses, are whispering in my ear all the things I do wrong and nothing about what I do right. I was shocked at the fact I am currently weighing the most ever, despite attempts to work out and eat healthy. My son has pink eye. My mother fell, wound up hospitalized and is now doing inpatient rehab to rebuild her strength. My house and family are obviously being neglected, not by choice, but happenstance. Something HAD to give.
Despite all the ugliness I have been facing, I have tried to look at the positives. If anything all the stress and suffering I have been enduring has made me put things in perspective. What are my priorities? What brings me joy? I have discovered who my friends are, and some of them were not who I would have thought were. Friends brought me coffee when I was at my mother’s bedside, because I complained about the lack of the good stuff on her floor. Another friend brought me breakfast. Meals were given. Child care offered. Others just listened as I poured my heart out. Many, many prayers raised up.
My faith was shaken to its very core, and I had to do a lot of soul searching. It caused me to make a prayer smash book, which is a form of journaling. I felt abandoned. I was in that figurative pit. I was living Psalm 30, whether I wanted to or not. The question was-do I let my circumstances make me bitter or better? I know that these situations are temporary. I know that my God is greater than all of this. My pit is temporary. If God brought me to it, He will certainly bring me through it. Like the psalmist, I was weeping in the night. Overwhelmed, broken, in need of healing desperately mind, body, and soul I cried out. I walked around in my sackcloth, flogging myself. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.
Despite my current situation, I know that there are greater things to come. Realizing that I needed to make changes in my life, these mini-crises have allowed me to reflect on what I want and what I am willing to do to get it. My walk with God has taken on a new perspective. I am reading Scripture with different eyes. I am looking for the good in everything, like the yin and yang. No matter how difficult things are, there is something positive in it. It has caused me re-examine my eating and exercise habits. I am changing things up both in the gym and the kitchen. I am slowly deleting people from my life who bring me down. Negativity does nothing to build you up, it only destroys you. There’s a meme with a cat strutting, inscribed “haters are going to hate”. I can’t change peoples’ opinions of me. I am confident in who I am, so I can’t let their poor attitudes affect mine. I want to be clothed in joy, have beauty traded for ashes.
Women of God can never be like women of the world. The world has enough women who are tough; we need women who are tender. There are enough women who are coarse; we need women who are kind. There are enough women who are rude; we need women who are refined. We have enough women of fame and fortune; we need more women of faith. We have enough greed; we need more goodness. We have enough vanity; we need more virtue. We have enough popularity; we need more purity. Margaret D. Nadauld

Buttercup
For years, I used to think that I had a black cloud hanging over me. Once in a while, it would clear up and I'd have sunshine. For the most part, however, it was dark and gloomy. It's only recently that it's been sunshine and buttercups, and I really like it.
Part of me is thinking that someone is going to tap me on the shoulder and say, "Excuse me, but you are living the wrong life." then they'd point towards the dark, gloomy valley and I'd slouch off that way. Waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop.
However, I cant think like that, because I deserve happiness. Ive worked hard to get to where I am. I've been mired in the muck, and have worked hard for every iota of success I have.
So I will carry on being fantabulous.
I am a firm believer that you need to put out good vibes to get them in return. Receiving blessings means you have to give them out. You pay it forward by giving back. These aren't just slogans. This is how I live my life. Years ago, at St. Elizabeth's Sunday School I remember hearing a Bible verse and drawing a picture of it. It touched me on a molecular level and has become my mission statement:
34 “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; 36 naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38 And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’
I've had a few people say, rather condescendingly I might add, that by me being me makes them look bad. I'm about building people up not tearing them down. I believe that the vibes you send out to the universe come back to you three fold. If you are negative, that's going to come back to you in a big way. I know, I've been there. I've been in that pit, too. It's being confident to know that sometimes you need the darkness to appreciate the light.
And, let the sun shine in, buttercup.

Caroling, Caroling
When I was younger, I remember groups of people going around neighborhoods caroling. That may be a throwback to another time and another place, but it was a part of the Christmas season. It was like trick or treating on Halloween; you'd ring the doorbell, sing a song or two and you'd get hot cocoa or a candy cane or if you were really lucky, cookies.
It seems as if that tradition has slowly faded away.
I am not a singer. When the Holy Spirit was distributing gifts, the one of good voice kind of skipped over me. That doesnt stop me, however. As I've been told repeatedly throughout my life, God loves a joyful noise. I've also been told that I sing way too loud and way too off key, but I'm going to keep on singing because God put a song in my heart (He didn't say that I had to sing it well)
The Little Man and I have had a few opportunities to go caroling this year and my heart cried out with delight.
The first opportunity was at a local nursing home through the youth program at church. We had baked cookies and decorated them. We went to the nursing home and sang. There were a lot of folks really happy we visited.
The other opportunity came about because of twitter. One of my tweeps posted a story about a family needing some holiday cheer, so I organized a caroling flash mob. This is the upside of social media!
I think it's time to bring back this tradition.
