Movie Night

Movie watching elf

I guess the elf likes watching holiday movies as much as I do!

I love holiday movies, especially the ones from my childhood. I grew up with Rudolph, Santa Claus is coming to town and the original Grinch.

My all time favorite has to be Its a Wonderful Life. It's not so much the movie itself, but the memories. It was my dad's favorite movie, so when I watch it, it's like he's here. Both of my son's grandfathers passed before he came into our life, and I know both of them would have loved him! Watching the movie helps me have that connection. My current favorite is Love, Actually. It's funny, romantic and stars a lot of my favorite actors-especially Liam Neeson and Hugh Grant. Like many of Hugh Grant's movies, there is a wistfulness and poignancy but it doesn't manipulate you. Movies help to make the season bright! BlogBooster-The most productive way for mobile blogging. Video Games

I went on the most amazing date last night. My son and I went to the movies and saw Wreck It Ralph. Believe it or not, we had never been to the movies together-other than the Cine Dome-before. I know, hard to believe right? He had gone from camp, but there's something to be said about bonding over popcorn and candy.
My son loves video games. Loves, loves LOVES them. This movie is all about video games-at least on the surface. Wreck it Ralph is the bad guy in Fix it Felix Jr, a video game that is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Ralph is tired of being the bad guy and wants respect.
So he goes turbo and invades another video game in search of it.
He winds up in a Call of Duty type game, and by plot twists and turns, winds up in the game Sugar Rush. It's in this game, Ralph learns important life lessons. He meets the Glitch, who threatens to bring down the game. However, the Glitch teaches Ralph what it means to be a hero.
My son told me that it was the best movie he's ever seen. Better than Toy Story or Rio, which he loved beyond belief. I liked that there was a strong, positive message that we can all be good, and do good things.
Most of all, I loved spending time with my favorite date!

Louis Quatorze

I had been lamenting the lack of independent film available in Sioux Falls. Salt Lake City has the Blue Mouse, Princeton has the Garden and Sioux Falls had nothing consistent. There's the Dakota Film Festival, and an occasional film but no hub.
Until now.
Enter Cinema Falls.
It fills a definite need for those of us on the prairie that think out of the mainstream for movies.
This past weekend, I had the opportunity to see the documentary, the Queen of Versailles. I had heard about it on NPR, and was hoping I wouldn't have to wait for Netflix or for. It to pop up on the Sundance channel.
The premise of the movie was a profile of the family building the largest single family house in America. Modeled on Versailles, it was an ostentatious shrine to capitalism. Built with a fortune made from time shares, the house featured multiple kitchens, a children's wing and a baseball field.
Unfortunately, the timing for this house was poor. As the economic downturn hit, the availability of easy credit disappeared, as did the fortunes of Westgate-the company that funded this lifestyle.
There were some unintentionally funny moments in the film, including taxidermist stuffed dogs, the formerly fabulously wealthy family flying coach, the wife being shocked that hertz didn't supply a driver. I wish I could find a level of sympathy for the family portrayed (I'm not including the 8 kids, as they are innocent) but I found the husband a lecherous, Hugh Hefner type, preying on middle class dreams . The wife stated in the beginning she went from graduating from Rochester Polytechnic with a degree in computer engineering to being a model and beauty queen. It was a feminist's worse nightmare.
The recession was lethal for the family's fortune, and eventually the house was listed for $100 million. In the meantime, juxtaposed with montages of empty sales offices and scenes of former well to do's being downgraded to limo drivers, the wife is shown getting a glycolic peel and Botox.
It was an interesting riff on want vs need, which is a timeless theme. In fact, the current presidential campaign seems to be a referendum on capitalism. What broke my heart was when the wife said that she would not have had 7 kids if it weren't for nannies. Even more heartbreaking was hearing from the nanny who hadn't seen her now adult son since he was 7. Another household staff member lived in the abandoned play house.
It was a fascinating look behind closed doors of the fabulously wealthy. While I was not disappointed with the vapid trophy wife hanging onto her looks and her man as she aged, the stereotype was shattered a bit (not much, but a little).
Glad that independent film has come to Sioux Falls.

Someday I'll Be Saturday Night

Its almost Friday, and I am glad this week is almost over.

The sun came out today for the first time in a week, and for some strange reason, I wound up with a migraine shortly afterward. I used to get migraines all the time, but this is only the second one I've had in the last 7 months since surgery, so I think I am doing ok. In fact, when it started, it was a bit of a shock because it had been so long.

Sad news: Little Man & I are big fans of Love Always, Bear. We read it daily, its the adventures of a family of dogs (and they wind up dressed up too!)

 One of the dogs, Fuzz,

RIP Fuzz. May you enjoy life on the other side of the rainbow bridge
passed away. Made me hug my puppy dog a little tighter.

No big weekend plans.
If the weather is nice, I want to go to the pool.

The Outdoor Campus has a womens try it event. I was supposed to go kayaking tonight,

but I was sidelined by the migraine.
Maybe the park

Saturday night there are outdoor movies at Fawick Park.

This week is Despicable Me.

Pop some popcorn at home, bring some cherry limeade, some fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, and yum we are all set.
Sunday, cookout with the family.
Rest and enjoy the Sabbath.

Restore.
