I have a radio app on my Blackberry that I can listen to radio stations all around the world. Its exciting because I can listen to WFNX (from Boston) and WXPN (Philly) as well as listen to the Jersey guys on NJ101.5. Radio around here is very limited and I usually wind up listening to either the metal station or the Christian station. If the little man is in the car and we're not listening to his mix on my ipod (current favorite song is Who Let the Dogs Out) we listen to the Christian station since I don't have to worry about what they are talking about or the music that they are playing. And I do worry about these things. The same with TV shows-I worry about violence and overall dirtiness that my little man gets exposed to. One of my biggest pet peeves is 2 & 1/2 men being shown at 6:30 at night, right after dinner when little ears hear all that double entendre. Its not that I am a prude, but I am a believer that kids should be kids and not have to hear all this stuff if they don't have to at age 7.
I have always been a music freak, going back to my younger years. I still listen to a lot of the same artists today that I listened to then, its just we've both evolved. U2 is one of my all time favorite bands and I think their music today is even better than when I first heard them as a teenager. Pearl Jam is another group that seems to get better with age...Foo Fighters...Red Hot Chili Peppers...and I am very excited that Soundgarden is getting back together. I think my musical taste peaked at Lollapalooza in the early 90's and its been sliding downhill ever since. There are a few more recent bands that I really love-Regina Spektor is one of them-but not enough to run out and buy all their cds (thank goodness for Itunes!). I've spent my discretionary money on music my whole life and I don't see that stopping anytime soon.
Right now the little man and I are watching Blues Clues on Nick Jr. For years I wanted him to do the talking back to the tv thing that is encouraged on children's programming. He was a passive participant-until recently. I get so excited when he yells out "A clue! A clue!". He does so many things the experts told me he would never, ever do. I love proving them wrong!!
I guess that's the rebel in me, and it goes from my clothing taste to movies I love to books I read to my whole personality. There's a rebellious streak a mile wide and I don't see that trait vanishing as I age. I don't want my little man to develop the snarkiness that I have but I wouldn't mind him continuing to have a great sense of humor either.
Today we have our pictures for the church directory. I am excited about that-we've never had a portrait done of the 3 of us so this is special. And then there is the Saturday trip to the library. We get movies out for family movie night, and lots of books to read too. I am so glad that the little man loves to read. Reading is my other major passion in life. I've been a reader since way back, and so is he. We both escape into them, and I am glad for it. He has a reading program going on at school-Read for the Stars-its a readathon, and the goal is for kids to read for 300 minutes over 14 days. Since we already read a lot to begin with(plus our bedtime stories) we're going to far exceed that. The first night we read for an hour!
The other big thing is I have to do some laundry and tidy up the house. And make the pizza bingo posters. Its nice to not have a ton of stuff to do today and just be able to enjoy my family!
