Radio radio

The big man loves to listen to the radio. He doesn't mind the preprogrammed playlists, the bland jocks or the commercials even. I, on the other hand, tend to be driven insane by it.
I have quite particular taste in music, and living where I do, I don't really hear "my" music on the radio. I do have apps that allow me to listen to "my" radio stations.
I listened to wfnx when I lived or vacationed in new England. It's alternative, out of Boston. Back in the day, they were one of my secret weapons to discovering new bands.
When I moved to Princeton after college, I was introduced to WXPN, which is from Philadelphia (1 of the few good things out of there) and it was love at first listen. They play an eclectic blend, much like WFMU from New York City.
Needless to say, I dont get that type of musical choice in Sioux Falls. I know that there are other folks like me here. I see them at the art galleries and yoga class and shopping at the co op. We do exist! I think that there could be all this talk about Sioux falls being more culturally important, but until we have more diversity in radio, it's limited at best.
It reminds me a lot of living in Salt Lake City in the early to mid 80's. There was bland, boring traditional radio. Then one day, the late great KCGL emerged from the FM wasteland. It was like a secret, hipster society of listeners. The station was like terrestrial pirate radio
I was a dj in college, for my college radio station. I started in the late 80's, in a building across the street from where Robert Frost once lived, and it was the ultimate college radio experience. It was the era of the Pixies, Del Fuegos, Lemonheads & Blake Babies: all these great bands out of Boston making it huge in the alternative scene. I'd go down I 93 to Boston to see shows, and was part of a scene that was emerging.
Heady times.
Fast forward to today. Actually, let's rewind to my drive home from work last night. The cord That i plug my iphone into in The car isnt working, so im stuck with the radio.
Normally I listen to either NPR or espn radio, because i can't stand the local musical choices. For whatever reason, I did put a music station on and I was pleasantly surprised: Elvis Costello's Radio Radio, which in turn inspired me to download his greatest hits and write this post.
So, thank you bad radio choices, you did inspire me today.
