All Hallows' Eve

Halloween is not just about trick or treating, costumes and jack o’laterns. The origin of Halloween goes back to Celtic times, when it was their new year and a celebration of family and ancestors. According to tradition, the veil between this world and the next was at its thinnest, and family that had passed away could come back and visit. This is the basis for including ancestors at dinner and offering food to them (turning into our tradition of trick or treating, eventually).

I like the part of honoring ancestors, since the older I get, the more important those connections are to me. It might be because part of my family tree is hazy and empty, and it might also be in part because of being a mom that this is gaining importance for not only myself but my family. Thanks to websites like Ancestry.com, its easier and easier to do genealogical research. Most Mormon wards also have access to the Family History library in Salt Lake City, where you can have someone help you get started for free. They also offer a free website called Family Search, which offers much of the same information asAncestry.com.

For family night we started making a family tree that we can hang in our photo gallery. Its an easy project, yet has so many benefits.
