Our introduction to this world comes with a big inhalation and exhalation. The Hebrew word for breath, ruach, is also the same word for spirit. Our breath and our soul are intertwined. Dawn Kirsch from Simply Breathing recently offered a workshop on Transformational Breathing. I am familiar with yogic breathing, and the different styles of it, but had never experienced Transformational Breathing. I had heard that it can help clear out negative emotions and set you on a path of healing, so it really piqued my curiosity. As my son would say, obviously I know how to breathe. But do I?
I tend to breathe only in my chest. I have known that for years, since I am coming from a yoga background. I am a shallow breather, and its hard for me to remember to breathe into my belly. The hardest part is when I try to belly breathe, I get light headed.
Dawn taught us a basic technique called the 100 breaths of joy. It’s pretty simple-100 belly breaths. Instead of yogi breathing, where you inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth, with transformational breathing its only through the mouth. Its apparently similar to Lamaze breathing, with making a sound on the exhale. I have to admit that its harder than it sounds, because of keeping track of the breaths. There are audio tracks with cues, as well as videos on You Tube demonstrating the technique.
Dawn suggested trying the 100 breaths every day, and see what transpires. I am doing mine in the morning, before I get out of bed and get my day going. I have been doing that and its been helping me start my day more grounded and with more energy, which is always a good thing.
Part of Transformational Breathing is also letting go of negative emotions and help encourage healing. I found a meditation on Pinterest using Transformational Breathing that I can’t wait to try!
A Full Breathe Session takes about 45 minutes.
Consciously decide what is your intension (your goal) for this session.
First pray before you start then belly breathe as discussed above for about 10 to 15 minutes. When you start to feel blocked patterns of energy as discussed above use Toning (sacred sound to move the blocked patterns of energy) Toning is hard to explain unless you've heard it but breathe into the belly and instead of breathing out let out a clear, loud, long sound like "ahh" until all the air is out of your belly do this three or four times. The sound is sort of like when the doctor says open up and say ah but longer. Eventually you may be able to adjust the ah to be like the same vibrations you feel in your body. then breathe some more. Return to breathing, the session may become a little intense but always except any emotions you may feel, breathe through them work through them except them...you may cry, laugh feel overwhelming joy, but keep breathing.
The next step is to breath your intension which must be in the affirmative like I am happy I am Healthy. Do that for 3 to 5 minutes.
Slow your breathing....
The final part is to receive any gifts or insights that your higher self or spirit/guides would like for you to have. So just "be" for a while and enjoy your relaxation, this sacred time you've given your self. Take a few deep breathes and come back into your body. You may want to write in a journal any revelations or thoughts you have
