We don't exist in a vacuum. Every decision we make, both good & bad, has a consequence and affect on others. When we choose to do good, positivity radiates like the sun. Some people choose based on if it makes them happy or feel good, without thinking about the far reaching impact on others. Being ego driven never works out in the end. The same as following the crowd...just because society says a behavior is ok doesn't mean that God agrees. Look at what our world is like right now, and how many people are doing things that are in direct violation of God's laws, but think that it's ok because society says it is, and it makes them "happy". That's a temporal thing. One day, when I stand before the throne of glory, I will have to answer to all the decisions I've made, and I want them to be worthy of my eternity.
