Someday I'll Be Saturday Night

I had a hot date last night. We got dressed up and went to a carnival and a drive in. We stayed out way too late and slept in this morning (at least one of us did). It was a fun time had by all.
Mother son bonding at its best, with my sister going on all the rides with him. I don't do rides, mainly due to a horrible combination of chronic back pain and an incurable fear of heights. So, the little man rode on almost eveything with the princess and I watched and took lots of pictures. Remember, his life will be scrapped in its entirety.
Its Memorial Day weekend, and back in my youth it would mean a trip to the shore. Not the shore that's depicted on MTV-even though I was into Guidos back then (heck, I married one!). My friends and I would go to Seaside, and bake in the sun and then hang out on the boardwalk after dark. We would spend way too much money trying to win cheesy prizes that would immediately forgotten once we got home. Playing rooftop mini golf, and eating ice cream and just having fun in the ocean air.
Now that I live inland, I don't have access to salt air, but there is a carnival that sets up shop in the mall parking lot every Memorial Day weekend. Little Man loves to go, so I oblige. Now that's he older, the kiddie rides are too boring for him, and we like the big boy rides. I don't go on them, so it was serendiptious that my sister is spending her summer here. She loves amusement park rides, and apparently so does my son.
He went on his first roller coaster last night. Talk about a big smile on his face. And we love love loved the tilt a whirl (that was always my favorite too). The princess even won him a giant nemo stuffed fish that is such a bright shade of orange it hurts my eyes.
After going through both funhouses a gazillion times, and down the giant slide even more, it was time for the fun to end, and to go home. But first, we went to Sonic (mainly because the princess forgot what time she was working today)and had some fun at the drive in. Little Man chose apple slices for his late night treat. I did not choose something healthy (and this 40 year old body felt it today).
Earlier in the day, we put together the new trampoline (since the windstorm earlier in the week destroyed the other one)as a family. It was our first family building project and we did great! Its together and bounceable. Unfortunately, the safety enclosure is a special order so we are (wait for it) without a net. As I was saying, we put it together as a family, and we worked together, following directions and all that jazz. Normally, its the big man and me being a little helper and the little man generally ignoring us. This time, he wanted to help and help he did. The downside was it was very hot out, and I missed some spots with the sunblock and wound up getting burned. The Little Man thinks its funny to hit me on my shoulders where I am burnt. I however, fail to find the humor in it.
I do find the humor in the fact that my life has so radically changed in the last few years. Way back when I used to think that Saturday nights were for going out and all that. Now, I am so into hanging with my boys that I couldn't even imagine going back to that lifestyle. I'd rather have movie night at home than going to the theater. Watching hot wheels flying around the living room and a dog barking at people walking by are my entertainment now.
