This week it is the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind, a seminal album in my pantheon of musical moments that changed my life. In addition, REM, a band that has helped provide the soundtrack to my life for the past 30 years or so, broke up.
It's been a weird week musically for me.
I admit that music plays a huge role in my life.
In fact, I couldn't exist without my soundtrack.
I was in college when Nevermind came out, and I dj'ed at my college radio station. I did primarily a hair metal show, but my roots are in punk rock and ska (as I wrote about here: http://mommydomchronicles.blogspot.com/2011/07/tenderness.html?m=1)
Nevermind allowed me to return to my roots and set the stage for my 20's.
My aural choices had evolved.

Nirvana laid that groundwork.
I started to listen to more "grunge" music, and by digging that scene, I was able to be more authentic me than the guidette or hair metal scenes I was flitting about. They took too much work, and I'm a hippie at heart.
I can't consistently do hair & make up, as much as I would love to. It's just not part of my psyche.
I'm kinda low maintenance in that regard.
As a teenager I discovered REM's Radio Free Europe and I was instantly in love with the band.
As I have gone through the twists & turns of my life, REM has remained consistent.

Few bands sound as good as REM did with their last single UBerlin, as they did 31 years ago. I'm still that geeky audiophile, listening in my bedroom with headphones on. Still wear glasses, still thrill over bands.
To quote ABBA, thank you for the music. It's been a wild ride.
