Shiny Happy People

Today is Election Day. When the polls close tonight, we may or may not have a new president. Reports estimate that over 1 billion dollars was spent by the two campaigns to earn a job that pays less than most MLB players make.
This made me think…
What if, instead of spending all that money on a campaign, the candidates instead chose to spend it on social justice? Think of all the good $1 billion dollars could do, not just in our country, but the world?
With the money spent on trying to persuade me to vote for such and such candidate, I wish they would show me what kind of stewards they would be with my tax dollars.
I would want that money to help alleviate hunger in this, the most prosperous nation on the planet. There is no reason for anyone to go without adequate food. I would want the campaign money to provide reasonable shelter for all. We need to look at those who are homeless as our brothers and sisters, not as a blight. They have a story, just as we all do. There were twists and turns on their journey that brought them to this place. Many of the homeless, do in fact, hold jobs-sometimes multiple. Many have fallen on difficult times during the great recession, and are struggling to right themselves. Others suffer from mental illness, and a lack of resources to get assistance. They are our brothers and sisters.
If I controlled campaign monies, there would be free preventative and primary care for all Americans. We would not have to worry about copays or deductibles and receive life saving screenings. Children would be able to have illnesses treated in a timely manner, prenatal care would be the expectation and family planning would be a regular conversation.
Instead of buying hateful tv ads, candidates instead would ensure that there was educational parity. Students nationwide would have the same textbooks, eliminating students in the inner city from using outdated materials. All students would receive a fair, free education and actually be taught things, not what’s going to be on a standardized test. Think of how excited a kindergartner is to go to school every day-wouldn’t it be great if how now cynical high schoolers had the same level of enthusiasm?
What a wonderful world it would be.
