Rally Round the Flag Boys

Every year, we get invited to the neighborhood cookout. The food is divided up by last name. by that measure, this year its dessert time. I am sure that there will be plenty of cake, ice cream and other confectionary delights.  I decided to make a fruit tray as a healthier (but still tasty) alternative.

I sliced up strawberries and bananas and laid them out in stripes. In the corner, I put blueberries and voila! A fruit flag.

Birthday

Since my son was in preschool,

I have baked cupcakes for him to share with his classmates for his birthday.

I think I may have baked my last batch, since he is in 5th grade.

It left me teary eyed as I watched him walk to the bus, swinging the cupcake holder.

I know he’s growing up, but its bittersweet. I love the fact that he’s turning into this amazing young man, but I also want him to be little just a little bit longer. I see his chubby cheeks morphing into a slender face. I see his body elongating. He’s developing his own taste and ideas, and less inclined to blind faith. I decided for this year, we were going to have tie-dyed cupcakes with bright blue frosting.

As I scattered sprinkles on top of them,

I was wistful. It brought me back to the first time I did them, with white frosting and happy birthday spelled out in candies. My little boy was growing up and this is a chance to celebrate.

1 box white cake mix

8 oz fruit punch soda (I used our soda stream)

Food coloring

Preheat oven to 350. Line your cupcake pan with wrappers. Mix the cake mix with the fruit punch soda (it needs to be fizzy). Stir in food coloring just enough to be in there but not completely blended. Fill wrappers ¾ full.  Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Let cool, then decorate.

Snow Ice Cream

1 c half & half
1 tsp vanilla
½ c sugar
5-6 c of CLEAN snow (best way to ensure this is to put out a big bowl to collect it as it snows)

Mix together and enjoy! This is such a fun tradition to do with the first snow fall.

99 in the Shade

It's been a crazy few weeks in . I've mbeen busy with work, planning for the upcoming church school year and getting my groove back-all while trying to beat the heat.
News flash: it's hot.
Really, really hot.
It's at the point where sidewalks are buckling, tempers are flaring and worse. I live in South Dakota, not Arizona. We are not used to 100 degree temps.
At least this craft chick is not.
After weeks of high temperatures, I feel as if I'm melting into a pool of molten fleshi tangled with pony tail holders, tank tops and capris. I am just HOT
There are a few ways to keep cool .

Stay hydrated. We have been drinking copious amounts of strawberry lemonade (recipe here: http://mommydomchronicles.blogspot.com/2012/05/strawberry-girl.html?m=1)
The other thing is home made frozen yogurt. Couldn't be easier

1 container plain yogurt
1 c berries
2 tsp honey or agave
Fresh mint

Place yogurt & berries in a blender. Purée together. Pour into a freezer safe container, stir in sweetener. Freeze 4-6 hours. Serve garnished with mint.

Just like your smile

I love nutella. The ooey gooey hazelnut deliciousness that it is warms my heart. That being said, I'm looking for other ways to eat it rather than sticking a spoon in a jar and licking it (don't worry I don't double dip!).
My son suggested that I make a cake. So thats exactly what I did.

1 c flour
1 banana smashed
2 tbsp oil
1 c brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 c nutella
1/2 c chocolate chips
2 tbsp milk
1 tsp baking soda
1 tbsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 350.
Mix all ingredients together. Pour into a pan. Bake for 20 minutes.

We made it a la mode, topped with raspberries!
