Walk on the Wild Side

Every year, on the first Friday after Labor Day, Sioux Falls hosts chalk the walk downtown.

The first Friday each month is like a giant party in Sioux Falls, with all sorts of events and happenings.

From the DTSF website www.dtsf.com

this one is one of my favorites.

It's a pretty simple premise: various sites had sidewalk chalk outside to allow artistic expression. There is a professional artist that does an amazing piece.

I got a chance to explore Chalk the Walk with my son and his best friend.

They had a great time finding new pieces on side streets. It was a chance to explore our city!

They were great artists too.

The fun doesn't have to end afterwards, either. It's super easy to make your own sidewalk chalk and have your own art show and contest.

I Heart Naptime (http://www.iheartnaptime.net/homemade-sidewalk-chalk/) has a great tutorial on how to make your own sidewalk chalk.
Homemade sidewalk chalk

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup plaster of paris
  • 2-3 TB washable tempera paint
  • Candy molds/ice cube trays (found mine at ikea)
  • Useful to have on hand:
  • Disposable bowls
  • Plastic spoons
  • Paper towels or newspaper

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water and plaster of paris in a small bowl. Stir with spoon until clumps are removed.
  2. Add paint and stir until combined.
  3. Once the chalk starts to get thick (like buttercream frosting) pour mixture into molds.
  4. Wipe around the edges of the mold with a damp paper towel to remove any excess paint.
  5. Allow chalk to dry for at least 24 hours before using.
  6. Take your chalk outside and let your kids go wild!

Float On

I took Little Man & his friend to the pool yesterday.

It was dastardly hot, humid and overcast.

The pool was crowded, with lots of little folks. We are so blessed in Sioux Falls with an amazing park and pool system. It was a perfect day.

We spend a lot of time at the pools in the summer. Our favorite is Drake Springs. There are a variety of pools and activities to chose from.

There's diving boards (which mom jumped from the high dive? This one!), water slides & even a lazy river.
Over the past week, we did our pool tour.

Laurel oaks on the fourth.

Terrace Park  the next day, with the Big Man.

I bring lots of yummy snacks-crackers, goldfish ( pizza flavor, please), frozen grapes & mandarin oranges. We drink hawaiian punch polar blast.

Little Man is old enough now that he can go in the water by himself, so I can get some quality mom time going.
I get to rock out to Imagine Dragons (my new fave band this summer).

I get to read a book. It's a win win for all of us!

Spicy crackers
1 sleeve saltines
Pam cooking spray
Garlic powder
Red pepper flakes
Oil or butter

Spray a baking sheet with Pam. Layer crackers on it. Brush with oil or butter. Sprinkle with seasoning. Bake 10 minutes.

Gratitude

There is a movement that is the antithesis of Black Friday consumer madness. It is Giving Tuesday, which promotes charitable giving, instead of buying material goods. While I am all for presents under the tree, I am also all for giving to organizations that touch my heart.

My grandmother and I were incredibly close. She was my best friend and my birthday buddy. She also suffered from high blood pressure for years, and as time marched on, developed congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation. She had a pacemaker and her aortic valve replaced. Eventually, it was complications from a stroke that took her from us in 1999.

Thanks to the Heart Association, more women are aware of their risk factors and what they can do to prevent heart disease (#1 killer of women).

My dad took on the daunting challenge of raising me when he married my mom. He dealt with my teenage years, and made it out alive
. My father in law served as a great role model to his three children and later, our own families. Both are linked by colon cancer.
Even though they both lost their battles My father in law giving a blessing at my wedding
However, their legacies live on. They are both memorialized at the hospitals in NJ where they were treated, as well as here in Sioux Falls.

I have a few difficult to shop for folks on my list. I found the solution several years ago by donating to both Heifer International and Nets for Life, both of which make a difference in the lives of families across the globe.

Another cause close to my heart is autism . My son has high functioning autism, and quite frankly I'm more interested in developing treatment protocols that ensure every child who has it can receive a quality education and have safe, well trained staff.

If you don't want to give money, you can always bake goodies or serve a meal at the Ronald McDonald House as well as give items on their wish list. Every year, my son and I bake and decorate cookies and bring them for the families staying there while their children are in the hospital. They have a wish list that can be filled by a trip to the grocery store.

Purple Rain

Last night I attended a Unity Day event for Domestic Violence month. It's an issue that I am passionate about, and have for about half my life. It started in college, when my RA broke up with her boyfriend. To get revenge, he torched her dorm room.
Several years later, I served on a special grand jury. One of the cases we heard haunted me, and still does. It was a woman who had suffered abuse at the hands of her socially prominent husband. He basically told her no one would believe her, and that if she told he'd kill her. She had the courage & strength to get out of the relationship and press charges. We, as the grand jury, were to determine if he would be indicted.
It was at that point I decided that I would work to make domestic violence history. I volunteered with Womanspace for a over a decade before we moved to South Dakota. I donate money and supplies to both the Compass Center and My Sister Friends House, two organizations supporting survivors in Sioux Falls. I'm in the basic planning stages of a V Day event for February 2013 to raise awareness. Its a passion for me. Seeing the fear in that woman's eyes as she recounted abuse on the stand changed my life. I don't want another woman to feel that way again.
Entering the main branch of the library last night, you were greeted with life sized figures bearing testimony. Each one represented a South Dakota woman who died as a result of domestic violence. There were too many.
At the event last night, survivors spoke. Professionals spoke. The US attorney representing South Dakota, Brendan Johnson, spoke. It was a powerful , moving event. It started with drumming, part of Lakota culture. [side note my son had never witnessed drumming live before, and sensory wise it was a challenge. He went to the children's section of the library and was fine] for me, the drums brought a level of sacredness to the event. It set the tone.
There were a variety of speakers. US Attorney Brendan Johnson, an advocate for women's rights and who has prosecuted thousands of domestic abuse cases, spoke to the changes being made in the court system. One if the challenges facing South Dakota is there are both tribal and non tribal courts, both busy.
A woman from Sisseton, who went from survivor to advocate with Sweet Grass, spoke of her journey. Chilling, and heroic, we need more people like her to share their stories and give hope.
Other advocates spoke, including a man who grew up on the Rosebud reservation and witnessed violence first hand as a child. He was about my age, and hearing him speak of how it's impacted him to this day tells of the lingering impact of violence on children. What got me was when he said that into his own married life, he slept fully dressed because he never knew if he'd have to leave in the middle of the night.
The speaker that made me think the most was the one that spoke about domestic violence in the gay community. It's not really talked about. There are a variety of reasons, which education and advocacy can help resolve.
The evening ended with a glow stick light vigil, in memory of those who lost their lives, those who are enduring violence and in hopes that no one else will have to.

Splish Splash

Last night was the final Wacky Water Carnival of the year with the Sioux Falls pools. We are so fortunate in our community with our Parks & Rec department! There are numerous parks to play in; sledding hills and even a ski area! In addition, there are beautiful gardens, golf courses and even several dog parks.
The crown jewels, however, are the pools. It's probably because as a mom, we spend a lot of time there. . One pool is comparable to a water park; another is spa like with the serene surroundings but above all my kiddo has fun!
