Crazy Train

There's a car commercial that uses Crazy Train in it, where there are kids singing it...anyhooo, that is a great analogy for my life right now.
Crazy Train, all aboard!
It's my blogoversary this week. Five whole years. Wowzers.
My whole reason for blogging has been in my life and part of our family for five whole years as of Thursday. It seems like forever. In a good way.
Tonight I teach vegan cooking at the Museum of Visual Materials. It's a pretty fun, easy to prepare menu that's good for you too.
Tomorrow is the last day of school, and I don't know who is more giddy-little man or me! He has a half day, and I'm surprising him by taking a half day off work too!!
Right now I'm on the deck, listening to birds and hanging with the pup. It's a beautiful moment before the chaos kicks back in again.
Rest, breathe, enjoy
Then climb back on board going down the rails.

I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMKXr-SLwyg&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Little Man had his art class today, and the Big Man and I planned some time to visit Artists Against Hunger, and wherever else the few childfree hours we had took us.
As we got downtown, a few flakes began to fall. So far this fall, it's been unseasonably warm, which has been wonderful. However, now that it's December, we need a little bit of snow on the ground to get into the holiday spirit.
Little Man was too excited to Draw Paint Create! I don't know what hes making the next few weeks because they are surprise presents for us. I do know he has a great time.
Meanwhile, the Big Man & I had an opportunity to support Feeding South Dakota (http://www.feedingsouthdakota.org/) and help lessen hunger in our area. I am more of an art lover than my husband is, but I think he enjoyed it. I do know that he thought the custom bikes were pretty cool. We both liked one painting of happy bunny as a skeleton (I know creepy and morbid but you have to believe me when I say it was well done).
By the time we left there to check out Simply Perfect's holiday open house (http://www.simplyperfectstore.com/) the snow was starting to stick and visions of sugar plums started to dance in my head (or was it the yummy warm apple cider and cookies?)
From there we went on a date. We started at the Phillips Ave Diner, but there was a huge line and we just wanted coffee. So we went across the street to Kaladis (http://kaladisbistro.com/index.html) which is always a great choice. It was so great to just spend some quiet, alone time with my beloved. We sat and talked; we sat in silence. After all these years sometimes it's ok to not speak.
After that, we dashed through the snow flakes and wandered around downtown Sioux Falls. If you were a casual observer, you would have thought we were either newly in love or filming a chick flick.
There are horse drawn wagon rides down Phillips Avenue and it was so romantic to watch them go by with a gentle snow falling.
As busy, working parents we have a hard time connecting. There are already far too many things on our to do lists; scheduling date night would make it another chore. I love the impromptu ones when they just happen organically & evolve.
We had a couple of hours to just hang out and be, no agenda, no set of errands or chores. Complete zen moment. Just us, the snow and some Christmas magic. Even though it was blustery outside, I had my love to keep me warm.

Pumpkin spice latte

I am an admitted Starbucks junkie. I have the iPhone app, there's one in the lobby where I work (too convenient), it's part of the bookstore ritual and I just love it.
My favorite beverage is the pumpkin spice latte.
However, it's quite an expensive vice, so I attempt to limit it. One way for me to indulge is to DIY it.

What you need:
Pumpkin spice creamer
Frothing pitcher
Coffee
Tall mug

Pour coffee into mug, about 3/4 of a glass. Pour creamer into frothing pitcher, froth. Pour into coffee mug, straining foam. Stir. Spoon foam onto top.

Cup of Coffee

French Press coffee is a robust, bold flavor much like an espresso. Its a bit of an aquired taste, but oh so worth it!

From E-how food

boil as much water needed for the amount of coffee you want to make.
Grind coffee beans, if necessary

Preheat French press by filling it with warm water from faucet.

Allow boiled water to rest for a few minutes to cool to optimum temperature (195 to 205 degrees F).

Pour warm water out of press and add ground coffee. Use two level tablespoons per six ounces of water.

Pour just enough hot water over grounds to wet them. Fresh coffee will expand as gas escapes.

Pour in remaining water and stir.

Place the plunger over the press to keep the heat in, but don't press it down yet.

Let the coffee brew for three to four minutes.

Push plunger down slowly.
Pour and drink the coffee.

Coffee Girl

I grew up in Utah, as a non Mormon. Drinking coffee was a political statement.

That was the beginning of a life long love affair. Other tastes come and go, but coffee is always there for me. This relationship began long before there was Starbucks or gourmet coffee or any of that fancy dancy stuff.

It was just black coffee, with a little bit of ice to reduce it to drinkability.

I was introduced to espresso in college, by someone who’s parents were from Italy.

When I was in my 20’s, I had relocated to the Princeton Area, and discovered Small World Coffee. Bliss.

As time marched on, I expanded my horizons to include mixed coffees and frappacinos.

All time favorite: mocha raspberry latte. Yum
